Impact of Paternity Leave on Paternal Childcare Time - Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Working Hour -
Park Mi-Jin

Abstract
This study examines the relationship between paternity leave and paternal childcare time, while considering any moderating effects of working hour.
Empirical evidence on the aspects of paternal childcare time from a broader perspective is sparse. This study used multilevel modeling and data were obtained from the 2015 European Working Condition Survey. This study found that paternity leave had no significant association with paternal childcare time.
Conversely, this study found that longer work hours were strongly associated with lower paternal childcare time, supporting the time availability theory.
Finally, the length of working hours was found to moderate the relationship between paternity leave and paternal childcare time. The findings of this study suggest that paternity leave policies alone may not be sufficient to improve paternal childcare time. The moderating effect suggests that working hour needs to be also considered. To be specific, reducing working hours may not only help male caregivers extend their childcare time directly, but also reinforce the impact of paternity leave. These findings shed light on the new role of men for balancing work and family.
